Re: Override CSS or best alternative CSS Style 3 method in Coffe

Hi there,

Can you please advise the best way to do the following while also being able to update the Coffe template when Gavick.com release patches & updates, I'm concerned I may change the CSS in the incorrect location & then when an update comes out I would replace my CSS & have to re-do my changes all over again.

For example, I want to use the colour #834cb1 instead of the Gavick colour #873f41, or is it a better solution to create a new CSS file called "css/style3.css" and within Override.CSS re-direct to it ?

A bit lost on the above, any help or advice would be great !

Thanks,

Niall Kelly

Just remember where you do the changes then download the new version unzip the file and apply the css changes.

Anyway the template is good for a Restaurant but the color you are using (Purple) for the logo (Massimo restaurant) are a inappropriate for an Italian restaurant would be better if you use Green white Red the color of the Italian flag.

Hi there,

OK in relation to the colour scheme issue, the restaurant has been open a few years, the colour scheme of the restaurant is black, grey, and purple. The branding are all designed to reflect this.

Anyway, I use:

http://winmerge.org/

Which is a great tool for file comparison checking etc, however, my question was not relating to this, I want to know Gavick's suggestion as to the best practice for updating the style sheets while also maintaining the regular template updates that are released by Gavick.

Thanks,

Hi

The best solution is to enable override.css file on template parameters and place there the classes change.
The content of override.css (like the name suppose to ;) ) will be used instead of originals classes.
This way all updates will not effect your customization and you can easily locate and update your changes.

Cheers ;)

Hi Seichinha,

Ok I have no copy of my original QuickStart installation I used for Coffe 1.6, I've been lazy & have not been updating the template files. I'm at version 1.6 & need to update to 2.1.

I could use WinMerge to do this if I had an original copy of the QuickStart.zip I used to install the template.

Can I get the old version from a Gavick archive ?, I've looked inside the 'tmp ' directory on the site & it has been deleted.

https://www.gavick.com/supportdesk/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/28/0/how-to-install-quickstart-package

Also, which file shoudl I compare using WinMerge, the old QuickStart to the latest QuickStart ?, or just the simple raw template file ?, I used the Override.css facility to customise the template btw.

Any ideas guys ?

Firstly backup your website and your database.
The way i normally do it is as follows.

If i dont edit any code or php files:
I just copy new version template on top of old version template and copy override.css and any edited images from backup copy.
If there is a newer language file from new version copy that to language folder overwriting any language file.

If i do edit any code in php files then i compare the files from my edit log to see the difference.
Also doing two local installations to see if there is any database sql difference in both versions.

Hi NormanUK,

Yes I've updated code & PHP files etc. I regularly back up the site. So basically if I do a new back up, download that file,
then use WinMerge to compare the two files ?

If I did copy the new QuickStart over my current files on the server it would replace all my post install
customisation etc.

Would it be easier to copy the latest CSS files over my current server side copy ?, or do I need to update
all the com's also ; (

Thanks,
