Can't Add Category

I've spent over a month working with the 1.5 version of this template and have had (what seems like) a never ending stream of problems, largely related to K2. So I thought I would try the Joomla 1.7 version to see if I can get by without it.

Unfortunately, I can't even get started with this. After installing the Quickstart, I went to create a category. Instead of the category being created, I get an Internal Server Error. After that it doesn't matter what I try to do, the site just crashes and gives me an infinite loop error.

I tried installing the Quickstart 3 different times and had the same problem each time. I'm not sure what the cause is. No one else seems to be experiencing it, but thought I would go ahead and report it.
