You need to enable using override.css file in template configuration to use it.

While we're on this subject, is it a difficult task for me to replace the main menu in sporter to say for example the menu on gamebox?

It uses the same structure, so replacing css and image files should work, but I have no idea if there will be no interference from other template styles. This is a customization so I cannot help You more, But You can alvays hire me to make such job if You wouldn't be able to make it Yourself.
