General question about posted updates to templates

Hi,

when there are updates in templates like in "CherryDesign", what is updated exactly?

From the update (1.0.3) I get redirected to the site
http://www.gavick.com/download/article/ ... esign.html

So are all the template files are updated? Or only the gk_cherrydesign_J!15.tgz file and the quick start doesn't include that updates?

Thanks

on the update page you will see what files to update to get the full update. and the tgz and quickstart is ofcause the files to take it from :)

so you mean tgz and quickstart are updated? (I ask because I'm wondering what to take for a beginner when no old cherry design was installed before)

Because

gk_cherrydesign_J!15.tgz/gk_cherrydesign/html/com_k2/templates/default/category.php is from 27.09.2010 so that means updated I think!

But

gk_cherrydesign_quickstart_J15.zip/templates/gk_cherrydesign/html/com_k2/templates/default/category.php is from 03.09.2010 so that means NOT updated I think! :(

So I'm wondering if you update only the tgz file and when I install ie. cherry design right now I have to put quickstart files to my server and after that I have to overwrite that files with the tgz files  ?

the files are updated yes. not all files are updated, only the ones that had errors, or has been tweaked... you can be asured those that are in the download area is updated :)

tgz is the template only, the quickstart is joomla + template + all content as the demo page shows...

Yeah, it would be fine if i can be sure to have the updated data in the download area in both, tgz and quickstart... but speaking in my example of cherry design:

In the 1.0.3 update of cherry design there is for example the file
html/com_k2/templates/default/category.php updated.

And... tgz version of that file is definitly not the same as in quickstart.zip

So it looks to me that only tgz is updated  !?

I have a follow-up question to this string.

I have been really busy (a good thing) and put my redesign on hold. Now that I am back, there are multiple updates to Corporate2. I am only on 1.1.0.

Do have to to update each version in order, or can I jump to the most recent version to upgrade?

Also, when I upgrade, how do I keep some of my custom tweaks to my site? For instance, I moved my logo, darkened the font color a bit, changed the navigation a bit, etc.

Do the updates remove custom changes to the site and require the customization to be done again?

Thanks in advance.

The best thing to do is download a copy of winmerg which you can get from here LINKY Compare your files with the update and transfer your changes to the new file or vise versa. You can also do that with the update files to see what has changed between versions. If you diff a directory, you can easily see which files have been changed or added etc.

Thanks for the reply, but I am on a Mac, so I can't use that program. My questions still remain.

@freshgs I've done a diff here on my linux machine... that was the reason I asked here ;)

I want a general statement from gavick if only the tgz gets the updates or tgz and quickstart files!?

I can also attest to the above....I downloaded the MyStore template on the weekend (quickstart and template)...i installed the quickstart to find that the template version in the quickstart was 2.0.3....so I had to uninstall the 2.0.3 and install the 2.0.4 template to the quickstart once installed on my server.

So to make the question from above easier to understand/ answer.....

You are saying that both the template and quickstart are updated (well they should be, but things are missed occasionally)... So to people reading this, since the template file is part of the quickstart package, then 99% of the time, both the template and the quickstart will have the same version number.....

The question we have is.....when an updated is made....are ONLY the files within the template effected, or have you updated files that are outside of the template file/directory?

Hi

As far as I know after every update template and quickstart are updated too. So just probably the version number was not changed. It happens occasionaly when there is a lot of updates made at one day.

Right...But that doesn't answer the question.....the question is.....When you make updates, are the updates only within the template folder/directory or do you update files that are NOT within the templates folder/directory???

This way, if we have a website already set up, we know whether all we do is update with the new template package....or whether we have to find which files were updated in the quickstart package, then ftp them to their respective folders/directory's on our live site.....

Hi

We create templates, so all changes are made within the template folder. The other case if there were some additional thing to the template as for example style for jomsocial which is applied to the jomsocial component.

I still don't understand . . .

". . . if there were some additional thing to the template as for example style for jomsocial which is applied to the jomsocial component . . ."

What does this mean?

Very simply . . .

My two questions were not answered.

1. If I am many updates behind. Do I have to go through all the old updates one by one and update the specific files?

or

1. It sounds like you might be suggesting downloading the most current quickstart files and using those. either way, my question #2 is still relevant.

2. Will my custom css changes be affected by the updates?

Well I'm sure there is a free diff tool out there for a mac, after all it's only an over priced Intel based PC, with restricted hardware and a re-branded free!BSD distro. Comparing files aint rocket science now is it? That's a rhetorical question. ;)

My reply wasn't directed at you, I gathered you had done a diff. :)

I replied to this...

Hi

Yes You should make an update after update till You reach the latest.

I recomend to use override.css file for all customization changes. This way even if You're many updates behind You simply upload a newest version of the template and copy the ovrride.css.
