Hello,
I have a website where there are fake users (set up by me) and one super user (myself). Yesterday there was a guy who registered to the site and became administrator as I had not done any change to permissions because it's not intended to have users and there is no register button visible on the website. I deleted that user and to avoid the problem in the future I made some changes to permissions but I thing that I went to far restricting access because when I logged in a bit later the back end was blank. Moreover now when I try to see the website or login the screen is blank and it says "Database connection error (2): Could not connect to MySQL".
I read some forums about the issue and I entered into the MySQL database; as I am not an expert I did not change anything.
I have sent an email to the company whom I have the hosting with requesting a recovery from what was there before all the issue started. They make a daily back up.
My question is: if my hosting company makes a recovery from the back up dated before the problems started, will I get what I had before without the need to start modifying http files, configuration, etc?
Thanks.
Regards,
Marc

Hi

All depends from what time this backup would be. Anyway this is strange that someone could make himself an administrator. What joomla version are You using ? I think You should report this to joomla developers . This can be a bug in joomla itself.

Hi teitbite
Thanks for your answer.
I am using Joomla 2.5
As I said before, the site is not intended to have users so when I set it up I did not do anything with permissions and maybe anyone registering was able to become an administrator.
Another question: what could be the reason to, in the first moment, find no icons in the back end of Joomla and, later, having no access at all and finding the message "Database connection error (2): Could not connect to MySQL." when I try to see my website or log in through the administrator? Could it be that I did something wrong amending permissions and maybe I even deleted access to the super user?
Thanks.
Regards,
Marc

Hi

It looks more of a files problem. May be a hack attempt too. It's really hard to tell, but I would try to reinstall joomla as a first step. Also check permissions to files (set all 755 - folders, 644 - files).

Changes to users permissions not allow administrator access. But please make a screen and show it to me so I'll make sure.

Hi,
Thanks for your answer.
The thing is that I am beginner in Joomla, php, etc so at the moment I am dealing with the hosting company because I would prefer no to start diving in php files, etc.
After reading some forums I think the problem is that I messed it up with permissions and maybe that affected the super user access and now the SQL database has no super user or it has one but the password is wrong (but honestly, I don't have a clue). I have read that the hosting company must set up a new super user and a new password.
We'll see and I will let you know.

Marc

Well, at the moment I have fixed a part of it, there was a difference in the password and I have amended it in the configuration.php file
So at the moment I can browse the website and I can log in to Joomla, but the back end is empty.
