Thanks, that put me on the right track but what I had was Mainbody only setup for the template, which is identical to the demo site. For the sake of experimentation I changed this up using the other three settings which of course did not produce the results I was looking for. Then I created the category as you suggested and it started working.
I have been working with Joomla for 4 years now and it might be the oldest issue for you but I have never had to create a category view on the site in order for this to work with other extensions that create similar results. Not to mention this method blows my SEF rules by adding recipe-category to the single article view. Something is so very wrong with the way that 1.7 works with menus.
I do thank you for helping me though but there has to be a better solution that works without the added work of creating a category view that is not linked to the actual article. That makes no sense at all why this should even work...
BTW, that is a beautiful little girl, you must be very proud...
