Creation Date not Modified Date needed in Blog Section Layout

I have a series of articles listed in a Blog Section, and I would like the dates at the side to be creation date, not modified date. The answer lies in blog_item.php, but i've replaced ever instance of 'modified' with 'created', with no success.
