Problems with Notice Messages

I made a my homepage a "registered" menu item, so that when you visit it, it will redirect to the login page. This is suppose to trigger the notice message that says "login first", but I don't see anything. But when the user logs-in, the message now shows on the new page together with "login successful" notice message.
