How to Add a Spellchecker to Your Joomla Editor

A spell checker (or spell check) is an application script that flags words in a article that may not be spelled correctly. If you use MS Word, Google Docs and most other writing tools, you’re used to seeing a red line under your spelling mistakes. But how to add this useful functionality to the edit field in the Joomla article?

There are several solution you or your client can use:

GoogleSpellchecker is a perfect tool to check spellings of words and come up with suggestions for misspelled words. Suggestions are sorted by the degree of closeness with the misspelled word. Words with spelling suggestions are automatically underlined in red. Simply right-click an underlined word to see the suggested correction and replace the misspelled word.

First, in order to add a spellchecker your WYSIWYG editor, it makes sense that you first need a JCE editor (http://www.joomlacontenteditor.net) installed. Now go to your JCE – Profile Tab -> Default -> Plugin Parametrs and find Spellchecker option in left column.

JCE 2.2.9 have a option to use the internal Browser spellchecker (if where available) has been added and set as the default spellchecker. IE8 & 9, which do not have a built in spellchecker, will use the Google Spellcheck option by default. An option has also been added to select and order the languages for the Google Spellchecker as this service supports a set number of languages.

The spellchecker won’t run automatically. Click the “abc” button to make it operate. That dropdown will show different languages available in the spellchecker.
