Template loads slowly even with compression enabled

I am using TWN template and I am having load time problems and CPU resource problems.

Firebug page speed analysis is suggesting the following files be combined into as few files as possible:
/templates/system/css/system.css
templates/system/css/general.css
/templates/gk_twn/layouts/css_compressed/layout.css
/templates/gk_twn/css_compressed/addons.css
/templates/gk_twn/css_compressed/modules.css

I have already enabled compression for CSS and javascript in the template preferences, but that didn't improve page speed.

My hosting company is throttling my account because of excess CPU usage. They say I have 10 scripts running at once on every page. I am not sure if that is all attributed to the template, and have a programmer looking into this for me.

I was wondering if you could shed any light on how to deal with this.
