How to format the post excerpt?

By displaying the posts in an blog, you have usally the featured image and below an excerpt of the text. I increased the amount of excerpt words in the template settings to 100.
The problem is, that there is no formatting of the text in the excerpt.

How can I display the text in the excerpt with paragraphs and bold letters?

Excerpt strips html tags and graphics by default, you can change the excerpt function or you can also use 3rd party plugin.
