We are also having a similar problem, about 5-10% of the time. When it does happen it blocks the whole page, i.e only the php error is shown.

We are also using gavick news, gavick tabs, and gavick news slideshow.

Next version of module will have fixed this problem - then module will show special information or last cached informations. It is probably connected with getting wrong XML data to cache file.
