Hi,

Yes, you can - you have to use included in the theme *.pot file included in the theme language directory.

The details are described here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Translating_WordPress

I recommend usage of the POedit for translation.

Remember to set your language in the wp-config.php file and name the language files with your language code i.e. pl_PL.mo and pl_PL.po

Is there any step by step guide on how to translate?
I translated the pot file to pt-BR (Brazilian Portuguese) but I have no idea of what to do with the .po and .mo files.
The wordpress website page you pointed us to doesn't give a clue on how to do this. There are lots of customers here who want to do it and there is very few information on the forum or the website.

Just explain it like this:
1 - download the pot file
2 - use POedit to edit it
3 - save a po and mo file
4 - copy the two files to directory <X> on your website
5 - Make the <following> changes on the <following> file
6 - change this on the theme
7 - change that on wordpress config

Not that difficult and would help a lot of people
Thanks

1. Go to http://www.poedit.net/download.php and download poedit for your operating system
2. Open THEMENAME.pot file, that is located inside of your theme in languages directory
3. Check if You have checked "Automatically compile .mo file on save" on Editor tab of PoEdit preferences (File->Preferences)
3. Translate all strings (If You dont know how to use PoEdit, go to "Step 3 Translating and Making Your .po File" paragraph on this site: http://wp.tutsplus.com/tutorials/theme- ... our-theme/, or here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Translating_ ... ith_Poedit)
4. Now, check if You have defined:
Code: Select all
define('WPLANG', '');

in wp-config.php file on your server.
Defined one will look like this:
Code: Select all
define('WPLANG', 'de_DE');

and not defined:
Code: Select all
define('WPLANG', '');

Now the part de_DE is important, because this is gonna be our new file name. If WPLANG is not defined, then we will use 'en_US' as filename

5. Back in PoEdit go to "save as" and use the filename from previous point (de_DE, en_US or any other You have determined previously).
6. Save files in languages subfolder of Your template (same folder where You have found oryginal .pot file) or on your desktop and upload them via ftp.

That should be it.

Theme, its frontend and backend custom text etc.
To translate only WP backend, You need to check how to do that on wordpress.org

I'm trying to translate to catalan but I'm missing something....when you save the file after translating it in Poedit you get a .mo and a .po file, isn't it? Do I need to upload both of them to "/wp/wp-content/themes/News/languages" folder?

I've done that and changed wp-config.php to include
Code: Select all
define('WPLANG', 'ca');
(the files I get are ca.po and ca.mo) but I can't get it translated! :roll:

You should rename the po and mo files to your language code, the default for english is en_US so for english you should rename files to en_US.po and en_US.mo - then it works fine.

'ca' is not correct language code. I think 'ca_ES' should be correct one.

Hi, @Romp

Could you send me a PM with backend and FTP access to your website? Then I'll be able to check it exactly.

I have done everything in your tutorials to change the wordpress language into spanish. It only half works. Most of the items have been translated but there are many more labels that have not changed. Like the written by, login, logout, etc.. I have transladed the .po and .mo files... Is there some other file that I need to edit? Can someone help me with this? My website is www.legionamarilla.com
