I'm in the same boat. I can get the tabs module to show tabs with a display like described here
http://demo.gavick.com/joomla16/mar2012/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1&Itemid=263 but I don't understand how it is set up on the demo page. I have attached a file explaining what I mean.

You can see the site (still in early development) here. http://www.collegeoptionsman.com/joomla/

And yes, I have already read the Tabs GK4 documentation here https://www.gavick.com/documentation/joomla-extensions/extensions-for-joomla-1-6/tabs-gk4/, and that does not answer my question.

Thanks in advance.

I did some progress by installing and enable all plugins in the "rest of files" packages, and by activating
Use typography
Use typography iconset
in the features tab of the template manager.

But still the image does not load for the tab, it loads for the tab module, but it does not load for the tab...
I get the tab name instead of the tab image...

Thanks again for any tip
