Changing text for Login/Register breaks module

I changed the text on the front page using the language overrides to say 'Existing customers', and 'Create account'. This was fine, but when I click on the I no longer get the GK pop up box and get the standard login and register boxes. I changed the text back, cleared the cache and they worked again.

How can I change this text without breaking the site.

some strings are as you might seen in template lang file.
