GK_News Bannertop Positions

Can you please help me on how make the bannertop module positions in gk_news template divided into 2 column and 2 rows as attached picture?

1) Add more module positions and use CSS to style them /difficult/
2) use one Custom HTML module there and inside insert what you want as you want, you can also use <table>. /easy/

i tried 2nd option which is the easy way, but weird thing happen when mouseover the image, there's blank white page
